The Daegu Marathon, with the world’s largest prize money, was held in downtown Daegu on the 7th with about 160 top elite athletes from 17 countries participating.

In the competition held in sunny spring weather, the men’s winner in the elite category was Kenya’s Stephen Kiprop, who crossed the finish line in 2 hours, 7 minutes and 3 seconds.

Kiprop achieved this result in his first attempt at a full marathon course with Kenya’s Kennedy Kimutai, who took second place with a time of 2 hours, 7 minutes and 39 seconds.

He won $100,000 in prize money by exceeding 2 hours and 6 minutes according to the competition rules that award prize money based on record.

The women’s winner was Ethiopian Ruthi Aga Sora, who won in 2 hours, 21 minutes and 7 seconds.

Sora Aga broke the competition record of 2 hours, 21 minutes and 56 seconds.

Sora Aga received $100,000 in prize money for passing the 21st squad.

Among domestic athletes, Daegu City Hall’s Lee Dong-jin (2 hours 18 minutes and 4 seconds) and K-Water’s Jeong Da-eun (2 hours 34 minutes and 32 seconds) ranked first in the men’s and women’s categories.

In this competition, which marks its 22nd anniversary this year, in addition to elite athletes, over 28,000 marathon enthusiasts and citizens from 55 countries also participated in the masters category to break records and improve their health.

The Masters division was divided into four events: full course (42.195 km), two-person full relay (21.0975 km), 10 km, and healthy run (5 km).

Starting with this competition, Daegu City plans to develop the Daegu Marathon into the most prestigious competition that can compete with the world’s six major marathon competitions, including London, New York, Chicago, Boston, Berlin, and Tokyo.

To this end, the city increased the prize money for first place in the competition from $40,000 to $160,000, $10,000 more than the Boston Marathon, and also raised the prize money for first place in the domestic men’s and women’s categories from 5 million won to 20 million won.

The prize money for those who achieve a new world record was increased from 100 million won to $100,000, and the prize money for those who achieved a new competition record was increased from $5,000 to $10,000.

Also, instead of a loop course where the same section is repeated three times, the course was changed to a circular course that runs throughout Daegu.

This competition was held as Korea’s only gold label competition recognized by the World Association of Athletics Federations.

Gold label competitions are awarded only to competitions that comply with the strict standards of the World Association of Athletics Federations.

Daegu Mayor Hong Jun-pyo said on Facebook that day, “We have announced to the world that this year’s tournament is the world’s highest prize money tournament, so we expect the world’s best players to participate next year.”

He also said, “Usually, marathon competition records are poor when the temperature exceeds 10 degrees Celsius. Starting next year, we will discuss with the Korea Association of Athletics Federations about starting at 10 a.m. on March 1st.”

Meanwhile, according to Daegu City, 30 of the contestants complained of symptoms such as pain in arms and legs, abrasions, and exhaustion, and 25 received on-site treatment, and 5 were taken to the hospital for treatment.
