Last year, a Belgian steel company built a facility that ferments carbon generated from the steelmaking process with bacteria.

Starting next year, European airlines will be required to use more than 2% of SAF, an eco-friendly, low-carbon aviation fuel, and ethanol produced by bacteria can be used as a raw material for SAF.

Researchers are also focusing on research to develop alternative materials for plastics in addition to ethanol by modifying the genes of carbon-eating bacteria.
