An accident occurred when fragments of a discarded battery from the International Space Station (ISS) fell into a home and pierced the ceiling and floor. There were no casualties.

According to the British Daily Mail on the 2nd (local time), the incident occurred while Alejandro Otero, who lives in Florida, USA, was on vacation. While on vacation on the 8th of last month, he received a call from his son and learned that there was a loud noise and a hole in the ceiling and floor of the house.

What fell into the house was a 2-pound cylindrical piece of metal believed to have come from a discarded battery pallet from the space station. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) recovered the fragment to determine its exact origin.

If this piece of metal turns out to be space debris from an actual space station, the relevant organization may be held liable for damages.

The Daily Mail reported that this fragment is believed to be a battery pallet that NASA dropped from the International Space Station in March 2021. At the time, NASA expected that all pallets would burn up once they entered the Earth’s atmosphere.

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) warned in a report last year that space debris could cause casualties once every two years until 2035.

“What are the chances of something falling with such force that it caused so much damage to the house,” Otero said. “I’m just thankful no one was hurt.”
