Controversy has arisen after it was revealed that an employee at a train station in China asked a disabled man with one arm to prove that he was disabled.

According to a report by Hong Kong media South China Morning Post (SCMP) on the 8th, a man named Li Fengqiang posted a video on social media depicting what he experienced at the entrance of a subway station in China on the 21st of last month.

In the video released by Li Pengchang, an employee at the train station informed Li Pengchang that he must present a government-issued pass for the disabled in order to use public transportation for free.

In response, Li Pengchang announced that he was a disabled person without one arm and argued that he did not need a pass for the disabled. Nevertheless, the staff did not let Li Pengchang through, saying he had to follow the rules. In the end, Li Pengchang gave money and bought his ticket.

When this incident became known and controversy arose, the subway company apologized for the employee’s lack of consideration. He also promised to protect the travel rights of people with disabilities in the future.

Li Pengqiang explained that he did not upload the video to criticize the employee, but to demand a “more humane” environment for people with disabilities.

“Many people with disabilities often find it difficult to muster the courage to leave their homes,” said Li Pengchang. “These unfriendly rules can prevent them from going out.”
