Short track Park Ji-won (28, Seoul City Hall) and Hwang Dae-heon (25, Gangwon Provincial Office) clashed again in the first qualifying round for the 500m national team. Park Ji-won was eliminated after finishing in last place in her group.

As similar scenes are repeated this season, netizens are flocking to Hwang Dae-heon’s social networking service (SNS) and pouring out malicious comments.

On the 6th, Hwang Dae-heon and Park Ji-won competed in the second group of the men’s 500m semifinals of the first round of selection for the 2024-205 season short track national team held at the Mokdong Ice Rink in Seoul.

Park Ji-won, who started as the first seed, started the race in second place, with Hwang Dae-heon chasing right behind her.

The crash occurred during the first lap. Dae-heon Hwang squeezed through the in-course and overtook Ji-won Park, and in the process, Ji-won Park stumbled and was pushed to the fence.

Dae-heon Hwang advanced to the finals in second place, while Ji-won Park was eliminated as he finished in last place in his group. The referee did not award a penalty for the scene.

This scene is spreading on X (Twitter) and elsewhere, arousing the anger of short track fans.

Netizens are pouring out criticism towards Hwang Dae-heon, such as, “If coincidence repeats, it is intentional,” “How is this different from the World Championships?” and “It seems like a blatant foul, but compete fairly.”

This is the fourth time this season that the two players have collided. Dae-heon Hwang received a yellow card (YC) and forfeited all points for pushing Park Ji-won, who was running ahead of him, from behind in the final of the 1000m second race of the first competition of the International Skating Union (ISU) World Cup in October last year.

In the men’s 1,500m final at the ISU World Championships on the 17th of last month, he received a penalty for pushing Park Ji-won with his body for pushing his way inside.

The next day, in the men’s 1000m final, Hwang Dae-heon committed a foul by pushing Park Ji-won with his hand when he gave him the lead.

Park Ji-won did not win a medal in the three games in which she clashed with Hwang Dae-heon. On the 19th of last month, Dae-heon Hwang met with reporters upon returning home from the World Championships and said, “We were in a situation where we were competing with each other. “There are a lot of situations that come up during a match,” he said, adding, “It’s definitely not intentional, so I hope people don’t misunderstand it too much.” At the time, the ice skating federation also concluded that there was no intentional collision.
