Lee Jeong-hoo (San Francisco Giants), who plays in the Major League Baseball (MLB), suffered a shoulder injury. Jeong-hoo Lee was injured while fielding in the top of the first inning in the 2024 Cincinnati Reds game held at Oracle Park in San Francisco, California, USA on the 13th. The primary finding was ‘shoulder dislocation’, and the club released a statement on the 15th (Korean time) that structural damage was confirmed to the player’s left shoulder as a result of the MRI examination.

Shoulder dislocation is a common injury not only in athletes but also in the general public. If I hurt my shoulder while exercising, can I put it back on myself?

Kim Sang-min, a professor of orthopedics at Korea University Guro Hospital, said in a past interview with Health Chosun, “I recommend that you come to the hospital rather than put it on yourself.” When the shoulder blade falls off, the surrounding soft tissue is damaged. This is because the ligaments surrounding the bones and the joint capsule surrounding the muscles and joints must be torn for the bones to move out of their original positions. Conversely, when inserting a bone, the surrounding soft tissue may be damaged. To minimize secondary soft tissue damage, a doctor with knowledge of tissue structure must insert the bone. All you have to do is fix the missing arm with a strap to prevent it from moving and go to the hospital.

If dislocation of one part is repeated three or more times, it is called ‘habitual dislocation’. This may be because the cartilage or bone has been damaged so much that the bone has already opened up for loss. If the soft tissue is torn too severe, dislocated, or the bones and cartilage are broken, surgery is necessary. Surgery is performed to restore torn joint capsules and ligaments or to compensate for bone and cartilage defects. For shoulder dislocations, glenoid labrum (cartilage surrounding the glenoid between the scapula and humerus) restoration surgery is most often performed.

To prevent dislocation, you should not exercise too hard. This is because if ligaments or muscles are torn due to movement greater than the range of motion of the joint, the bone may fall out. It is difficult to prevent dislocation just by stretching sufficiently before exercising. Stretching has a greater purpose in preventing sprains, and people with flexible bodies tend to be more prone to dislocations than those with less flexible bodies. The key to preventing dislocation is to move only within the range your joints allow.

After treating a dislocation, there are things to check before starting to exercise again. ▲Whether the swelling has gone down ▲To what extent can you move the joints and muscles of the injured area ▲Whether there is significant discomfort when applying a load of 1/3 to 1/2 of your body weight on the injured area? If you don’t feel anything wrong, you can start exercising. However, you should not immediately return to your original exercise intensity. The intensity should be increased gradually.
