The Prime Minister of Slovakia was shot multiple times on the 15th (local time) and was taken to the hospital in critical condition and underwent surgery. The Slovak government defined this incident as an assassination attempt targeting the prime minister.

The Slovak Prime Minister’s Office said, “After the government meeting, there was an assassination attempt targeting Prime Minister Pizzo.”

According to the Slovak government, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fizzo (59) was shot in a village outside the capital Bratislava and was taken to the hospital that day.

The shooting occurred in the Handlova area, 150 km northeast of Bratislava. The Slovakian government held a ministerial meeting at the ‘House of Culture’ in the area, and it was reported that several gunshots were heard while Prime Minister Pizzo was meeting supporters after the meeting.

A video of the scene spread through social media showed a security guard rushing Prime Minister Pitso, who had been shot, into a vehicle and transporting him, while a suspect in the incident was subdued by police not far away.

Prime Minister Pizzo was transferred by helicopter after the paramedics judged him to be in critical condition while being transported by car. Local media reported that the suspect fired about five shots, and that Prime Minister Pitso was hit by at least three of them in the abdomen.

The ambulance took Prime Minister Pitso to Banska Bystrica Hospital in the nearby city, where emergency surgery was performed for several hours. The Prime Minister’s Office only stated that Prime Minister Pitso’s condition was critical.

The suspect was arrested at the scene and is currently being investigated by Slovakian police.

Slovakian Interior Minister Matus Sutaj Estok met with reporters and said, “This assassination attempt was politically motivated and the suspect decided to commit the crime immediately after the election last month.” The election mentioned by Minister Estoc appears to refer to the April presidential election in which Prime Minister Pitso’s camp won.

Slovakian broadcasters obtained and reported a video recording of him saying that he opposed government policies during the police investigation.

Prime Minister Pitso served as prime minister three terms in total, including his first term from 2006 to 2010 and consecutive terms from 2012 to 2018. In the general election held in October last year, he returned to the position of prime minister, winning on the back of pro-Russian public opinion opposing support for Ukraine.

The international community, regardless of faction, strongly condemned this incident.

U.S. President Joe Biden said in a statement, “We condemn this horrific act of violence,” and Russian President Vladimir Putin also condemned the shooting as a “monstrous crime” in a message to Slovakian President Caputova.
