The person who attempted to assassinate Slovakia’s prime minister was a ‘lone wolf’ who did not belong to a political group – Dong-A Ilbo VRESP TODAY

The Minister of the Interior, without revealing the exact details, said, “We found a clear political motive”. Prime Minister Picho is a person who has long caused division due to his pro-Russian and anti-American tendencies.

Slovakia’s Interior Minister Matus Sutaj Estok said on the 16th that the attempted assassin who was arrested and indicted the day before by attempting to assassinate Prime Minister Roberto Pizzo by shooting him only seriously wounding him was a ‘lone wolf’ who did not belong to any political faction.

Prime Minister Pitso’s life was once said to be in danger, but hospital officials said that although the surgery was very serious, his life was not in danger and he was recovering from the disease.

The attempted assassination of the prime minister, which shocked Slovakia, was blamed by many on the extreme political polarization that divided the country.

Minister Sutai Estok said there was a “clear political motive” behind the attack on Prime Minister Pitso, but that the suspect was a “lone wolf” who did not belong to any political group.

However, he did not specifically reveal what the motive for the crime was. Prime Minister Pizzo has long been a divisive figure in Slovakia and other countries, and his pro-Russian and anti-American stance returned to power last year, raising concerns among EU countries that Slovakia would abandon its pro-Western path. .

Ahead of the European Parliament elections in June, protests against Prime Minister Fico’s policies continued throughout Slovakia.

Meanwhile, outgoing President Zuzana Caputova and incoming President Peter Pellegrini, who have opposed Prime Minister Pitso, appealed to Slovakians to overcome political differences for the good of the country. President Caputova said the attack was a reflection of an increasingly polarized society and that representatives of all political parties would meet and work to bring peace.

He said, “Let’s break away from the vicious cycle of hatred and mutual criticism. “The attempted assassination of the Prime Minister was an individual act, but the tense atmosphere of hatred is the result of the collective work of all of us.”

President-elect Pellegrini has called on political parties to suspend or scale back their campaigns for June’s European Parliament elections. He said, “What the Slovak people need now is basic agreement and unity among Slovak politicians. “If there is no agreement, we must at least find a civilized way to discuss it with each other,” he said.

Meanwhile, Slovak police did not provide any information about the identity of the gunman, but media reports said he was a 71-year-old retiree known as an amateur poet and had worked as a security guard at a shopping mall in the south-west.
