U.S.-Foreign Minister Turkiye phone call… Discussion on release of hostages held by Hamas and ceasefire – Korean broadcast – VOA Korean VRESP TODAY

U.S. Secretary of State Tony Blinken and Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan Turkye held a telephone conference yesterday (15th) to discuss issues of a ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinian armed faction Hamas.

U.S. State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said in a press release that the two secretaries discussed efforts to achieve an immediate ceasefire that would secure the release of hostages held by Hamas and help alleviate suffering for Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

The two ministers also discussed ongoing efforts to secure long-lasting peace in the Gaza Strip, Miller added.

In particular, Secretary Blinken emphasized the importance of preventing the escalation of conflict in the Middle East and increasing humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.

Meanwhile, Hamas’s top political leader, Ismail Haniyeh, criticized Israel for the continued stalemate in ceasefire negotiations in the Gaza Strip.

In a televised speech, top political leader Haniyeh claimed that negotiations had collapsed due to Israel’s opposition to the Qatar-Egypt mediation plan that Hamas had recently agreed to.

He emphasized that “any effort or agreement must be premised on a permanent ceasefire, complete withdrawal of (Israeli forces) from the entire Gaza Strip, actual prisoner exchange, return of migrants, reconstruction, and lifting of the blockade (of the Gaza Strip).”

Top political leader Haniyeh also dismissed Israel’s call for the “elimination of Hamas,” saying that Hamas, along with all internal political factions, will decide on the composition of the post-war Gaza administration.
