A period drama set in Korea in the 1950s and 1960s… Working with Byun Yo-han and Lee Gyu-hyung
(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Hwang Jae-ha = “It’s been 28 years since I debuted in the movies, and I’ve been acting for 35 years, starting with plays. It’s been 35 years since I’ve been able to say hello to a drama. It’s unfamiliar, I’m nervous, and at the same time, I’m excited. “I think it’s a place where I have mixed emotions.”
Actor Song Kang-ho, who has appeared in numerous popular films, expressed his feelings about attempting his first drama acting in the Disney+ original series ‘Uncle Samsik’.
Song Kang-ho explained why he decided to appear in the drama and the characteristics of the work at the Grand Intercontinental Seoul Parnas in Gangnam-gu, where the production presentation for ‘Uncle Samsik’ was held on the morning of the 8th.
‘Uncle Samsik’ is a period drama set in Korea in the 1950s and 1960s, when the political situation was chaotic.
The main characters are Park Doo-chil (Song Kang-ho), who is called ‘Uncle for three meals’ because he always feeds his people three meals a day even during war, and Kim San (Byeon Yo-han), an elite young man who wants to create a country where everyone eats well and lives well.
After returning from the United States with a doctorate in economics, Kim San tries to realize his plan to develop Korea’s economy, but is repeatedly frustrated. Park Doo-chil, who noticed his ability and passion, extended his hand and said, “I have a grand plan to make your dream come true.”
Song Kang-ho explained, “(‘Uncle Samsik’) is a very Korean title,” and added, “I think it’s a drama that best captures the unique Korean emotions because it’s set in a time when food was desperate.”
Director Shin Yeon-sik, who wrote and directed both, said, “Korea seems to be the only country where the question ‘Have you eaten?’ is a greeting,” and “When the elites around him talk about grand discourse, the character called Uncle Samsik understands the world through eating. and communicate,” he introduced.
The actors who attended the production presentation placed great significance on being part of Song Kang-ho’s first drama. The actors made jokes about Song Kang-ho, calling him a ‘new actor’ or ‘junior’.
When asked why he decided to appear in the drama, Byun Yo-han wittily replied, “Because there was news of senior Song Kang-ho’s strong debut.” Yoo Jae-myeong made people laugh by saying, “This is Song Kang-ho’s first drama, so I wanted to explain to him that this is how I film dramas.”
Seo Hyun-woo said of Song Kang-ho, “A new actor can’t be this nervous. It was a truly rare experience,” and Jin Ki-ju said, “Every time my junior (Song Kang-ho) asked me what the scenes we filmed were like, it was really difficult for me. “I dare say this to my junior,” he confessed.
Eight actors and director Shin attended the production presentation. Lee Kyu-hyung, who played the role of Kang Seong-min, a member of the National Assembly and a powerful figure in the government, was unable to attend because he underwent surgery that day due to an Achilles tendon injury.
Parts 1 to 5 of the 16-episode ‘Uncle Samsik’ will be released on the 15th of this month, and then part 2 will be released every Wednesday thereafter. The final parts 14 to 16 will be released on the 19th of next month.
